The January 2024 transfer window is not as glamorous as the summer, or even January 2023. Clubs across Europe are doing very little business.
For example in the Premier League, teams spent €2.79 billion during the summer transfer window and €842 million in January 2023.
Transfermarkt revealed that Premier League teams spent only 121 million euros in January 2024. Here are some teams that are still making the most of the January 2024 transfer window:
Atletico Madrid
Third in the La Liga table, Atletico Madrid may not be chasing quantity in the transfer market, but they are getting quality. To the surprise of many, they signed highly-rated centre-half Arthur Vermeeren from Antwerp.
The Belgian national team player has been linked with almost every elite club across Europe, with a transfer fee mooted between 35-50 million euros.
But the 18-year-old suddenly appeared at Atletico Madrid and signed a contract for an initial fee of 22 million euros plus 5 million euros.
While Vermeeren may not break straight into the first team, Atletico have secured one of the most coveted teenage players in Europe.
Coupled with the signings of defender Gabriel Paulista and goalkeeper Horatiu Moldovan, the club will be in a good position to face the challenges of the second half of the season.
Tottenham Hotspur
Spurs have done well to secure a new centre-back given their lack of options in the January 2024 transfer window.
At 25 million euros from Genoa, Radu Dragusin is the most expensive signing in the Premier League this season. The price of 25 million euros is considered very good considering the potential of the player.
Also, despite still searching for his first goal for the club, German striker Timo Werner, arriving on loan from RB Leipzig, has brought energy and vigour into Spurs’ attack with an assist in his first two league appearances.
Bayern Munchen
Despite failing in their attempts to land a defensive midfielder, Bayern Munich are still enjoying a positive transfer window. The signing of right-back Sacha Boey is particularly interesting, as the 23-year-old has been in solid form for Galatasaray since joining the club in 2021 and has impressed in the Champions League.
Sacha Boey, who was brought in for 30 million euros, will significantly improve Bayern’s right side. The signing of Eric Dier, on loan from Tottenham, also offers coach Thomas Tuchel experience and versatility at the back.
As a bonus, Bayern also managed to accelerate the signing of Granada winger Bryan Zaragoza. His €15 million arrival has been agreed for the summer, just before the January 2024 transfer deadline.
